Last week we had the Cactus Festival here in Brugge. And, miracle, we even had good weather! I went on Saturday and Sunday.
Impressions:
It keeps getting more and more expensive! I spent so much money, tickets, food, drinks, lots of drinks. The first editions were free! The festival was alos a lot smaller then. Kinda cosy. But hey it is still my favourite festival!
And fun, so much fun. A lot of people showed up, it got pretty crowded at certain moments.
The music: saw some good bands, that Jamaican band was fun, the band looked like they were over 500 years old all together, but 'nice jammin'
The food: yummy world cuisine.
La famiglia: a lot of the 'la famiglia' members were there and it felt like one big reunion. It's always fun to see everybody back all together, and this festival is excellent for reunions like this: relaxed, lots of drinks and good music.
One little remark though: who the hell decided to put the toilets at the back of the festival, you had to walk like a mile to get there, plus those containers really stink. Where are the old usual 'real' toilets left of the stage?? And who moved the cocktailbar all the way to the back as well? We used to have the most strategic position before, in between the cocktailbar and the beer bar, everybody happy! Ah well :-)
I really enjoyed Ozark Henry, although I kinda missed his female backup singers. Unfortunately I missed Gabriel Rios (but for a good reason!), and apparently he was really good. Gotan Projects was very stylish, what a seductive female singer they had, pfew!
To make it even better, I found out on Sunday I'd be seeing my special friend on Monday, what a bonus! (That was the good reason to miss Garbiel and get home a bit earlier to get organised!) A super weekend!
And to my special friend: thank you for making me shine, I must have received a 100 compliments :-) See, I told you!
This weekend is the start of the annual abundance of music festivals in Belgium. Werchter 2007.
First I decided not to go. Then maybe I was gonna go just for one day, to see Keane, but of course, I was too late to buy a ticket.
So, my friends who are there right now, each called me last night while Keane was playing on the main stage and let me each hear an entire song. Thank you so much guys! It felt like being there just a little bit. I owe you big time!
My first edition of Torhout/Werchter was in 1985. Young, naive, impressed and ridiculously sunburnt! I had scars on my nose, my head and (a bit of) my cleavage for weeks after that. I was so impressed, I also had the chance to stay in the same tent with a guy I had a big crush on. Hey, I was young, and easily pleased at that time, just being in the same tent was enough for me! U2, Depeche Mode, Joe Cocker, the Ramones, REM, the Style Council, Paul Young, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. No, my memory is not that good that I remembered all the bands, I found it on Wikipedia (love that site!) on this link. Saw Crowded House there in 1992. Saw many bands. Saw so many concerts and festivals. At that time the festival was only 2 days, one day in Torhout, near Brugge, and one day in Werchter, near Brussels. Perfect. Now it's 4 days in Werchter.
And next week is the fabulous Cactusfestival here in Brugge. I so love that festival. Great bands this year, Ozark Henry, Gabriel Rios, Gotan Project, Horace Andy, Buffalo Tom and many more.
The Cactusfestival feels a bit like coming home every year. You meet old friends you haven't seen for a year. Last time was the previous edition of Cactus. Many many beers. Every edition of this festival holds so many good memories.
I already have a date with Yvtje left of the cocktailbar and right of the beer bar. Very strategic position, facing the stage. That's also where I will find the last remaining members of 'La Famiglia'. That is what it feels like, one big family gathering, but then only the cool side of the family, not the drunk uncle and gossiping aunt. Fiesta! The only regret is that my special friend can not be there. Hopefully next time.
Ah, another song of the week. I am really very much impressed by this Belgian singer. The first single of Stan Van Samang, called Scars. I don't know much about this guy. He's kinda cute, and an actor.
A song about changes in life. It's not the most original sound, sounds a bit nineties really, but for some reason I really love this song. From the first time I heard it it gave me goosebumps. I'm very thankful for the changes in my life.
'Don't mind the scars, they make it more beautiful. It's alright.'
